How I Teach Tennis

Volley

Closer to the net, and less swing than you think.

Building the Volley

The volley is built forward rather than backward: where the body goes decides the shot, and the racket does less than a new player expects.

Principle

The body moves to the ball; the racket stays simple.

It's the first volley because it's the one where the idea is easiest to feel — that the shot is made by moving to the ball rather than by swinging at it.

Where This Happens

These are private lessons.

Which means the pace is set by the player rather than by a class — a concept takes as long as it takes, and nobody moves on before the one underneath it holds up.
