Lesson 02
The Transfer
The body creates the momentum; the arm delivers it.
A good forehand isn't powered by the arm alone. The movement of the legs, hips, and shoulders creates momentum and rhythm through the shot. In this lesson, we learn how to transfer our weight and rotate the body so that this momentum can flow naturally into the topspin finish we learned in Lesson 1.

How the Lesson Runs
01
Find the loaded position
We begin by establishing a balanced, athletic position from which the body can move through the shot. The player learns what it feels like to be turned, loaded, and ready to move forward.
02
Transfer the weight
We learn to begin with more of our weight on the back foot and transfer it toward the front foot as we move through the ball. This gives the stroke forward momentum without relying entirely on the arm.
03
Let the body move the racket
Next, we connect the weight transfer with the rotation of the hips and shoulders. The player begins to feel how the movement of the body can carry the racket through the shot while the arm remains relatively relaxed.
04
Add the finish
Now we connect the transfer to the topspin finish from Lesson 1. The body creates the momentum through the shot, and the arm and racket continue that movement into the finish.
05
Develop rhythm
Finally, we begin putting the pieces together. Rather than thinking of the transfer and finish as separate movements, the goal is for them to become one continuous, rhythmic action: load, transfer, rotate, finish.

Lessons are private, so a step takes as long as it takes — nobody moves on before the one underneath it holds up.
